The whole performance was introduced by The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who shared a personal story with Cohen as well a few words of respect. The story came from the history Cohen shares as Trudeau’s father’s good friend. The entire performance and the introduction speech can be found below.
The track that Feist covered was “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye” and is off of Cohen‘s debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen. A grammy winning album that was released in December of 1967 via Columbia Records.
The performance consisted of Feist stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and two back up singers. The tribute was a perfect representation of the vulnerability that made Cohen’s music such a moving body of work.
Cohen passed away in Los Angeles and was confirmed by the icon’s record label, Sony Music Canada, through their Facebook page. The announcement came about 5 months ago and has left the music world with a void ever since.
