The classic new-wave outfit Modern English has canceled the entirety of their remaining shows from the Take Me To The Trees spring tour. The news came after Gary McDowell under went emergency surgery in Los Angeles on Friday, March 24th due to what is being called a “serious illness.” McDowell will remain hospitalized for a few more days before being flown home to England for continued treatment.
Although the band has expressed its grief for the cancelled shows they recognize the importance of McDowell’s recovery and explained additionally they would not be able to continue shows without him. The following statement was released form the band:
“All of us, Gary especially, are very sorry to have to announce the sudden cancellation of our “Take Me To The Trees” U.S. and Canadian dates. This is due to a serious illness and urgent surgery required for our guitarist Gary. Obviously we are very upset and disappointed to have to come to this decision, but without Gary we can’t play any concerts. After recovering from surgery, Gary will be flown home to England for further treatment.”
For those who planned to attend the now cancelled tour don’t lose hope, the band also expressed its full intention of returning to the U.S. and Canada to fulfill their unfinished tour dates.
Modern English was on tour supporting their 2017 EP release Take Me To The Trees, recently they had performed at SXSW and had plans to cross the U.S. and hit stops in Canada. The group who had taken a hiatus in 1990, only to regroup and rebrand in 2010, as Modern English has been highly sought after due to a catchy new-wave rebirth sound that has been gaining fans new and old. This tour cancellation is hopefully only a minor setback in a great comeback story.
