The mysterious forthcoming collaborative album by Sufjan Stevens, The National‘s Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and James McAlister, Sufjan’s current drummer, has just seen it’s first single release and now has an official release date. As reported by Pitchfork, the album is titled Planetarium and has been highly anticipated since its announcement of completion last month. Planetarium will be released on June 9 and spans a total of 17 tracks. A full track listing and the album’s cover art can be found below.
The new single is titled “Saturn” and has been released as a video, with accompanying lyrics that unscramble across the bottom of the screen throughout. The overall theme of the new album follows a trip through the milky way with the planets and various systems visited along the way. A press release described the album as “part rock odyssey, part electronic experiment, part classical opus,” taking listeners to the stars to explore “mythology, astrology, science, astronomy and the intricacies of human consciousness.” While “Saturn” is technically the fourteenth stop that these collaborative artist take us to, it is the perfect indication of what the entire trip will be about. Check out the new video for “Saturn” below and let your mind take a journey through space.
