After announcing a surprise show at SXSW a mere 3 days ago, singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey delivered a beautiful set at Apple Music’s event space on 612 West 4th Street. With the artist’s forthcoming 5th album hopefully to be announced just around the corner, a flurry of fans took the opportunity to film her set with a plethora of iPhone cameras (Apple Music indeed).
In the musician’s first concert of 2017, she played several venerable Del Rey classics such as “Video Games” and “Ultraviolence,” but the real showstopper was the first performance of her latest single “Love.” Interestingly, none of the songs played were from her latest album Honeymoon, but the multitude of other tracks more than made up for the lack of recency.
“Love” was played as the finisher for the set, and did more than enough as its role as a wrapper-upper. The track’s dreamy quality actually accentuated the singer’s pop sensibilities, the song becoming an excellent appetizer for what’s to come soon.
Prior to “Love,” Del Rey had last visited the pop culture sphere as a featured artist on multiple tracks off of The Weeknd’s 3rd album Starboy. She also provided uncredited backing vocals on “Party Monster” and was featured on an interlude entitled “Stargirl Interlude.”
