Very rarely, there is a supergroup that simply seems too good to be true. When Giraffe Tongue Orchestra was founded in 2012, it seemed like one of those moments. With an all-star cast featuring William DuVall of Alice in Chains, Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta and Pete Griffin of Dethklok and Zappa Plays Zappa.
The phenomenal supergroup went on to release their first album, Broken Lines, in September of 2016 featuring 10 earblasting tracks of red-blooded hard rock. After mainly playing it out in the European arena, the band made their U.S. debut with a fantastic performance at SXSW.
The show, held last night in March 17, had the band hitting the stage at The Sunset Room in Austin, TX. Unsurprisingly, the turnout was pretty spectacular. Amongst the many audience members enjoying such a talented stage, one fan took the liberty of recording entire set, available below.
The band had planned on making their US debut last year, but guitarist Brent Hinds’ motorcycle accident that postponed the Mastodon tour affected Giraffe Tongue Orchestra as well.
The stage had the band playing 7 tracks last night, with each song featuring the same manic guitar interplay and the jazzy Mars Volta-like drumming that made the band’s debut album so unique.
