Russian punk-rockers Pussy Riot gave SXSW-goers a treat this year as the group premiered the Pussy Riot Theatre in their multimedia production, “REVOLUTION.”
While it was already reported that Nadya Tolokonnikova was slated to be one of the featured speakers at this year’s SXSW, the new production comes as an added treat for fans of the highly controversial punk group.
The notorious group has had several run-ins with one form of authority or another, whether it be their 2012 performance at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, or spending two years in prison, Russian prison.
In 2013 Maria Alyokhina had her acting debut in the “Burning Doors” play by Belarus Free Theatre, which provided the inspiration for the new Pussy Riot Theatre project.
The new play takes viewers through Pussy Riot’s personal and professional journey over the years, focusing on protests in the Red Square and their previously-mentioned cathedral performance. It’s the ultimate punk story.
