WATCH: Mike Patton Performs “Lookaway” with Max and Igor Cavalera Live in San Francisco

After an ecstatic introduction from Max Cavalera, Mike Patton of Faith No More joined the Cavalera brothers on stage during show in San Francisco, CA. The surprise guest appearance happened during Max and Igor Cavalera’s performance of their former band Sepultura‘s song “Lookaway.” A couple fan made videos, shot from the crowd, of the Friday night (March 3) performance can be seen below.

The reason that this was such an amazing surprise was because Patton was actually featured on the song’s original studio album, along with Korn‘s Jonathan Davis and House Of Pain/ex-Limp Bizkit‘s DJ Lethal. The two latter were absent from the nights performance, however.

The Cavalera brothers are finishing up the second leg of their North American tour to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Sepultura’s album, Roots. The tour is called the Return to Roots tour and it has the brothers performing their debut band’s LP in its entirety. Immolation and Full of Hell have been with the brothers during this tour so far, with the final show scheduled for March 4 in Santa Ana, CA at The Observatory.

According to Blabbermouth.net, Max Cavalera had this to say of Patton’s appearance on the track during an interview with ARTISTdirect:

“Mike Patton was on the song, and Jonathan’s a huge FAITH NO MORE fan. He was actually freaking out that Patton was there. He was really nervous, which was actually kind of funny. He kept chewing on his hair the whole time he was in the studio. Ross Robinson teased him at one point and told him to calm down. [Laughs] Lookaway’ came out of a jam. It’s a really heavy riff. Patton started singing this Indian chant, and it gave me goosebumps in the studio when he did that. It was so intense. He showed up in the studio with a Samsonite briefcase. I was like, ‘Mike, what’s up with the briefcase?’ He said, ‘It’s what I need to record.’ It had an echo pedal inside for his voice and a bottle of wine. He opened the wine and we drank it. At one point, the three of us were on the floor of the studio going crazy and making weird noises and sounds! Jonathan took it to another level. He’s singing about people with a fear of pussy, which is a crazy concept. It came out as a really cool, obscure song on ‘Roots’.”

Sepultura was formed back in 1984 and was a huge influence on the thrash metal scene during this time. The Cavalera brothers were both founders of the band but left the group in 1996 and 2006. Although they left the group the band is still together, despite many lineup changes, and actually released an album titled Machine Messiahthis year.
