City and Colour @ Hammerstein Ballroom 6/10

It wasn’t always an acoustic world for Dallas Green of City and Colour, who used to sing and play guitar in the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire. He started this creative project around 2005, released his first album called Sometimes, and just kept on going with it. Once Alexisonfire went their separate ways in 2011, Green was able to make City and Colour his main creative focus. His music is serene and relaxing, even if a bit sad, but that’s where his soft spot is–writing music that’s vulnerable and is flooding with emotion.

Bring Me Your Love was his next release–an honest record that really proves just how deep Green is willing to go emotionally to create the music that resonates the most with him. Listen to songs like “Forgive Me” and “What Makes a Man” and you’ll begin to understand what he’s trying to achieve musically–tracks that push you against a wall and make you want to cradle your heart.

Green finds a new energy on his albums that follow–one that’s a bit more commercial, more pop-like, and has his voice a bit more polished than the acoustic grit of his earlier songs. He veers into a darker sphere, though, with I Should Go Before You, his fifth studio release–a record that explores a sultry twist amidst his angelic voice, especially heard on tracks like “Lover Come Back” and “Blood.” But no matter what Dallas Green of City and Colour does, it’s all coming from the same place–that same heart, that same soul, that same voice that had something to say, has something to say, and just keeps on doing it.
