Andy Cush attended a party last weekend at the ACLU Benefit and was lucky enough to catch Sleater-Kinney joined by Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron and Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy cover Buffalo Springfields “Fortunate Son”. The 1970’s hit song is an ode to the protest rock of the time and has erie reflections of our current political atmosphere. Was this impromptu collaboration really a reminder of where we as a country might be headed? The artist community has always thrived during socially and politically turbulent times, and thats why there are amazing song like “Fortunate Son” that speak directly about the war and its injustices. This music isn’t just catchy and fun, it was something the people stood behind, it was the voice of the people. You can tell just how well these tones reverberated with fans back in the 70’s by how alive the band and crowd got this past weekend at the ACLU Benefit. Either a good song to play or a moment of foreshadowing the performance from Sleater-Kinney and the rest of the on stage collaborators was an amazingly fun jam moment.
this is not the first time we have heard a live collaboration from Sleater-Kinney check out Fred Armisien join them on stage for a unique rendition of rock lobster.
