Oathbreaker @ Sidewinder 3/24

Oathbreaker is an eclectic, Belgian black metal band that formed in 2008. The East Flanders natives have garnered numerous fans from around the world, primarily due to their experimental and inventive take on the metal genre. Oathbreaker is generally labeled a black metal band, however, their music consists of elements from a wide array of musical genres ranging from punk to shoegaze – somewhat in the vain of Deafheaven.

Oathbreaker’s third and most recent effort, 2016’s Rheia, attained wide praise from both critics and fans upon release. The album was featured on multiple year-end lists from popular publications, including Consequence of Sound and Noisey. Rheia displayed a much more post-metal/post-hardcore style than the black metal sound of previous albums. Of course, Oathbreaker has been gradually evolving their sound on every album. 2013’s Eros|Anteros was the first Oathbreaker album to feature clean vocals. Creatively, the group is very open to taking inspiration from unlikely artists. An interview with Music & Riots revealed that Gilles Demolder (bass) and Caro Tanghe (vocals) took inspiration for the honest lyrical content in Sun Kil Moon songs. Oathbreaker’s unique take on metal stems from their appreciation of all music and their willingness to adapt their sound.

You can see Oathbreaker live next month at the Sidewinder on march 24th.
