Richard Edwards is the frontman of indie band Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s, and now he’s doing his own thing. There’s only a small taste out there of what you can expect from his solo project–two songs called “Disappeared Planets” and “Lil Dead Eye-d”–but it’s just enough to make you want all of it. The songs are emotional and lonely as it explores the theme of absence, but they’re strikingly beautiful still. He wrote the album after struggling with a severe stomach illness, followed by a tumultuous divorce. The result? An album called Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset that’s to be released on Joyful Noise Recordings at the end of March, and was produced by Rob Schnapf (who also produced music of Elliot Smith).
Edwards’ sound doesn’t leap that far from the more acoustic tracks of Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s, but it’s an album that belongs to him, his story, his life. Writing this album for Edwards was a cathartic experience–one that helped him recover emotionally from all the struggles he endured, and allowed him to exist in a place of self-acceptance and well-being. It is what it is, sometimes–and that’s his new attitude.
If you’re a long-time fan of Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s, which first came about back in Indiana back in 2004, you’ll appreciate what Richard Edwards is doing here–even with only two songs released. And playing an intimate venue like Rough Trade is right where this music belongs.
