Earlier this year, At The Drive-In released their first new song in over a decade and a half, “Governed by Contagions.” Now, the El Paso post-hardcore legends have upped the ante with the announcement of a brand new album and another single, “Incurably Innocent.” The album, titled in • ter a • li • a will be released on May 5, 2017 through Rise Records.
The band’s lineup will not include original guitarist and vocalist Jim Ward – instead guitarist Keeley Davis joins the fold. Davis made his first mark on the music world with Engine Down before joining Ward’s At The Drive In offshoot Sparta for a brief spell.
in • ter a • li • a is their first since their breakthrough cross-over hit Relationship of Command. The band famously went on an indefinite hiatus following the unexpected success of the record, a hiatus which would essentially be a break-up. After 17 years, the music landscape has shifted significantly. While the brand of abrasive indie rock they peddled on Relationship of Command and In/Casino/Out would eventually become a touchstone for a huge movement of groups given the so-called label “screamo,” that trend has largely died. However, much like Thursday, a recently-reunited band, At The Drive In always had a lot more in common with the “real” screamo groups of the late 80s and early 90s.
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has been an extremely busy man as of late. Not only did he manage to release whopping 12 albums in 2016, he has also joined up with members of Le Butcherettes and Melvins to form a supergroup Crystal Fairy, who released their debut this February.
Meanwhile, drummer Tony Hajjar joined up with members of Mastodon and Queens of the Stone Age for his own supergroup Gone is Gone. The band recently released an EP and full-length record in addition to playing couple one-off live shows, including one at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.
