Rock/industrial supergroup Primitive Race are gearing up for a release this fall with their new and creatively-titled Volume 2. While the name may not jump out at you, the talent involved just might.

In addition to producer/bass player Chris Kniker leading the band, former Faith No More Singer Chuck Mosley will be lending his talents for vocals while the Melvins’ very own Dale Crover will take over drum duty for the 10-song collection.

For fans of any of these artists, this collaboration seems like a no-brainer, and Mosley agreed.

“When I listened to the music for Primitive Race, ideas just came pouring out,” he said. “I couldn’t say no to doing the record. When we completed the first few tracks, I found myself wishing I had written them, not just the lyrics… just good heavy riffs and grooves really sucked me in. The melodies and words came super easy with this music.”

The collaborative spirit has always been central to Primitive Race, as the band has been a revolving door of talent including Prong’s Tommy Victor, Graham Crabb (Pop Will Eat Itself), Dave Ogilvie of Skinny Puppy and several others, which gave their sound “an industrial bent.”

This time around, however, the addition of Crover and Mosley create a sharper focus, and as a result, a different sound.

“During the recording of the first Primitive Race album there was a natural shift from the industrial sound of our collective histories towards something more fluid and punk,” explained Kniker. “It was something I really wanted to explore with Mark and Erie, knowing we wanted something raw, organic with big, loud live drums as we began working on Volume 2.” The Mark he is referring to is Mark Thwaite, known for his work with MGT, Peter Murphy and The Mission.

If the addition of Crover and Mosley aren’t enough to raise the anticipation for this album, just hear what Mosley had to say about it.

“Even though it’s a whole different vibe it brought out a side of me I haven’t experienced since writing with [Faith No More].”

Stay tuned as more information, including a release date and the tracklist, are announced.

Need a Crover fix before the album? The Melvins recently formed a new group Crystal Fairy and dropped the stellar track “Chiseler.”
