Pussy Riot Theatre @ National Sawdust 3/17

It’s what Pussy Riot believes in–resist dictatorship, fight for a positive cause (especially for women’s right and the LGBT community), and grab attention to it all by ransacking public places while covered in masks. It’s what brought Pussy Riot to fame after invading an Orthodox church–a “protest performance” which flooded the internet and led three of the five members to getting arrested for “hooliganism.” Their defiant punk songs are in direct response to current controversies–songs with appropriate titles like “Kill the Sexist” and “Death to Prison, Freedom to Protests.”

Pussy Riot’s pursuit of freedom of speech and equality has turned them into international figures, praised by people everywhere for being a fearlessly progressive representation of female activists in modern age. If their voices can be heard, Pussy Riot wants to be there.

At National Sawdust there will be a performance of the group’s new music project called Pussy Riot Theatre, based on a new piece called “Revolution” that’s inspired by founding member Maria Alyokhina’s novel. What you’ll get from this project is Maria’s side of the Pussy Riot story, which she will perform with other creatives, supported with music, video footage and art. A conversation with members of the team will conclude the show.
