Metallica’s James Hetfield worked through some visibly frustrating technical difficulties with his mic as the band took the stage with Lady Gaga tonight at the 59th Grammy Awards.

Jamming to their latest album’s lead single “Moth to the Flame,” the rock veterans were blindsided when Hetfield’s mic wasn’t working for the first couple verses of the song. Gaga and the rest of the band did an amazing job to keep the performance alive, while Hetfield would eventually give up and share a mic with Gaga for much of the performance. The sound issues were never completely resolved but as they say, “the show must go on.” Despite being challenged by these issues, the two acts were able to put on a a highly respectable show. The frustration, however, was not lost on Hetfield’s face at the end of the song. Full performance can be seen below.

Neither of the two performers were up for an award on tonight’s Grammys due to their albums, Joanne and Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, coming out too late to meet the qualification deadline. Gaga has recently announced a world tour to follow her Superbowl performance last week.
