British singer-songwriter Johnny Flynn is actually very underrated for being such such a versatile creative. He’s been on tour with Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons, acted beside Anne Hathaway, performed Shakespeare on stage, and has also released some pretty exceptional folk music, starting first with A Larum, his debut album from 2008.
His sound is sophisticated and pretty. It could fit perfectly into a movie scene of a lonely lover taking a long drive through the English countryside, and then on songs like “The Box” and “Leftovers” he introduces you to his bluegrassy sound that’s jovial and energetic and makes you want to sing along and party. On Been Listening, his sophomore album, Flynn showcases a new sense of maturity. He’s a more realized musician on this release, and it’s obvious. He leans on his country roots on “Sweet William Part 2” in a fiddle-filled outlaw kind of way, and then on “The Water” featuring Laura Marling it shows just how perfectly his voice suits such tender tracks with lush lyrics: “Where the blue of the sea meets the sky and the big yellow sun leads me home. I’m everywhere now, the way is a vow.” His voice is destined to be paired with singers like Marling, their harmonies seriously beautiful, haunting and romantic.
Johnny Flynn has a new record coming out in March called Sillion. His first single off the album called “Raising the Dead” has already been released.
