A True Classic
Classixx’s sound is inspired by the sounds of past classics: the synths and singing of the ’80s, and the beats of ’70s disco. However, with Faraway Reach Classixx are able to use these inspirations to craft an innovative and fun album that sounds altogether new. The group brings together great singers, good songwriting and solid instrumentation to make every song sound distinct and compelling in its own way. This is a great album to relax to, dance to or just listen to during a walk. With it, Classixx have definitely positioned themselves as one of the most unique DJ duos releasing music within the electronic community.
Every song on Faraway Reach slowly pulls you in as the album unfolds before you. “Safe Inside” features great singing from Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit, adding to the funky and happy vibe on the song. Classixx know exactly how to use their talents in this song. Right after this, “I Feel Numb” draws us in with its groovy bass and hard drums that really make for a great dance track. Additionally, Alex Frankel delivers some great vocals that are altered and sampled to great effect during the chorus. Classixx simply know exactly whom to collaborate with to augment their tracks. They are great producers and engineers.
Even though this album was released last year, its impact is still fresh and its content is still engaging. These tracks are fun and danceable, but they also explore territory that is rarely visited. “The Dissolve” moves along slowly and uses entrancing rhythms and soothing singing to evoke an ethereal vibe. It feels like everything is slowly dissolving. Another highlight is the title track, “Faraway Reach,” which builds itself up perfectly by gradually unveiling every component that comprises the song. Classixx evoke feeling in this track with their instrumentation and a drop that is far from the norm in dance music; but that’s what makes it great.
Classixx have really brought back a classic spirit of inspiration and experimentation on Faraway Reach that has been sorely missing from some electronic releases lately. It definitely has paid off for them in the long run. This was one of the best albums of 2016. Hopefully Classixx can keep up the good work and continue to give us exciting albums.
