Atlanta, Georgia must have something in the water: and whatever that is, well, it must be a major factor that ties such a vast, and eclectic group of musicians all together…in every genre. “A-Town” is ranked amongst the top in the hip-hop scene. It’s a city that gave birth to the flower punks. And, of course, for those who enjoy the often and/or occasional head-bang, Atlanta is also home to innovators within the Metal landscape too: Hello, Mastodon…we’re talkin’ about you.
In light of all this mystical genius erupting in the south, the four-piece phenomena (previously mentioned) awe fans again with the latest single from their upcoming album Emperor of Sand. The second track “Show Yourself” strays from the typical metal-esque formula, and it totally works. Show Yourself is relatively large deviation from the record’s first single “Sultan’s Curse”. However, it is Mastodon’s quoted desires to, “never write the same album twice,” that ultimately lead to their continuous success. So, while Mastodon flirts with elements found in other genres of music, their ingenuity blends the amassed seamlessly.
Show Yourself entertains small romances with earlier moments in rock and roll history, and indulges in a steady undertow of that intuitive metal sound: at times the new track finds solace in legendary groups Rush, Yes and Foreigner. With that said, the production value inserts itself via beautifully mixed guitar solos and ominous vocals unheard in earlier works from Mastodon.
Sources at The Prp confirm Mastodon’s plans to tour in support of the new album, and…wait…it gets better…they are doing it with their good friends Eagles of Death Metal and Russian Circles. This is a jump-up-and-scream -yeah-in-a-public-setting kind of moment, folks. So go ahead, do it. Oh yeah. The tour kicks off on April 14th in Montana and, as of now, concluded in late June in Texas.
