Futurebirds @ Barracuda 2/11

Futurebirds are a 5-piece indie rock outfit known for the implementation of country/Americana elements into their music. Their unique sound has set them apart from numerous indie rock acts and has helped them achieve a solid and loyal fanbase. Pitchfork described their sound—in a review of their 2013 sophomore LP, Baba Yaga—as “cosmic country,” due to their infusion of psychedelia in their tracks.

Futurebirds’ formation could be traced back to the college town of Athens, Georgia. Some members of the group met while interning at the Chase Park Transduction recording studio. Due to the diverse college demographics of Athens, Futurebirds found solace in the towns music and arts scene, and their music truly began to thrive. They released their debut album, Hampton’s Lullaby, in 2010 on Autumn Tone Records, and shortly after embarked on a nationwide tour. The group has played with many prominent acts such as Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Drive-By truckers, and The Whigs. Their latest effort, 2015’s Hotel Parties, was the groups most focused and minimal album to date. Despite the stripped back nature of Hotel Parties, Futurebirds still put on energetic and intense live performances.
