Prepare for loud when you listen to A Place to Bury Strangers. Their sound is heavy, experimental “noise” rock, and when they play live it’s on another scale. APTBS are based in New York, and after playing Webster Hall in 2006 that’s when the buzz really got started. Their first self-titled album was released just a year after that performance, showcasing the band’s relentlessness that you can hear on tracks like “The Falling Sun” and “My Weakness.” Laced in between such heavy tracks, though, you can hear a sense of psychedelic rock reminiscent of Jesus and Mary Chain, one of the band’s top inspirations.
The band has seen some replacements in their lineup over the years, starting after the release of their second album Exploding Head, but their momentum never faltered. They’ve performed with some big-name bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, MGMT, and Nine Inch Nails, and have toured all over the globe.
Their latest album Transfixiation, released in 2015, is lighter than their past records, which you can hear from the first track “Supermaster.” To say it’s “catchy” might sound strange, but in a way it really is for this band. Their sound is more organized and dissected than it is a crazy overload of music that seriously categorizes them as being that “noise band from New York.” They still are that band–they’re just playing it a little differently these days.
