Kehlani drops her debut album SweetSexySavage tomorrow after months of anticipation. The first trap influenced single “CRZY” already peaked at number 85 on Billboard Hot 100 and the music world is ready for more.
In 2014, Kehlani released her first mixtape, Cloud19. She then signed with Atlantic Records in 2015; a week after she released her second mixtape titled You Should Be Here. The release granted Kehlani her first Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2016. The Oakland singer sold out each show on her North American tour promoting the mixtape. And while she’s relatively new to the hip-hop scene, she’s already teamed up with some pretty big names. She opened for G-Easy on the second leg of his tour, she collaborated with Zayn on his debut album, and her mixtape features Chicago natives Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid.
Kehlani first appeared as a part of the group PopLyfe on America’s Got Talent in 2011; they finished fourth in the competition but not before she caught the eye of then host Nick Cannon. She credits Cannon for helping her when at her lowest point by giving her amazing career opportunities and even a place to live. Kehlani’s smooth R&B style has the ability to both uplift and depress you simultaneously. You can hear the pain and struggle in the singer’s strong vocals surrounded by mesmerizing downbeats in the track “Gangsta” which is on the summer blockbuster Suicide Squad’s official soundtrack (the song is also a bonus on the deluxe edition of SweetSexySavage).
Kehlani’s SweetSexySavage Tour begins next month and concludes in June in California. She will make a stop in Chicago at Concord Music Hall May 7th – ticket details below.
