Jenny Hval @ Lincoln Hall (3/30)

Norwegian artist Jenny Hval returns to Chicago at the end of March and will play at Lincoln Hall.  Her performances are more artistic than a traditional concert as she uses her music, visuals, interesting props and baffling stunts to convey a message.  For example, she has whispered her lyrics from inside an inflatable kiddie pool standing on its side.

Hval has released six studio albums; the first two under the name Rockettothesky, and the others under her birth name.  Her fifth album, Apocalypse, Girl really established her avant-garde/art-pop musical style which is somehow dark and whimsical at the same time.  She followed Apocalypose, Girl in 2016 with the concept album Blood Bitch which is influenced by horror films, vampires and menstrual blood.  Of which she has said it’s “an investigation of…blood that is shed naturally…the purest and most powerful, yet most trivial, and most terrifying blood.”  She explains that blood can be seen in a negative light (as in the slasher movies) but also as a life-giver (menstruation).

Whether you are familiar with her art or not, the show is guaranteed to make you think.

Fun Fact: The singer/songwriter uses her writing talents for more than songwriting as she is also a published author.  She released her debut novel titled Perlebryggeriet in 2009.
