Chip King and Lee Buford are the masterminds behind Portland based, industrial sludge metal outfit, The Body. Initially, the group formed in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1999, however they later relocated to Providence, where they remained for ten years–now currently residing in Portland, Oregon. In their 17-year long run, The Body has stayed prolific till this day, boating 5 studio albums, as well as numerous collaborations, EPs, and splits.
The Body released their eponymous debut full-length in 1999, following a self-titled demo that same year. Although they’ve primarily been classified as a metal band for most their career, the duo recently had musical shift–now drawing influence from multiple genres under the electronic umbrella. 2014 was a turning point with the release of their critically acclaimed, fourth studio album, I Shall Die Here. Tired of the constant repetition and recycled sounds found in contemporary metal music, The Body aimed to break the mold, and evolve their sound in ways most metal bands wouldn’t think of. Their fifth and latest 2016 record, No One Deserves Happiness, continued their experimental ways, taking cues from house music to modern hip hop.
Of course, despite their change in sound, The Body’s music is not for the faint of heart. They’ve managed to maintain the abrasive and dreadful quality of doom metal in a unique and interesting way. Don’t miss The Body perform next month at Grizzly Hall.
