Shannon and the Clams @ Baby’s All Right 1/17

Shannon and the Clams is a trio from Oakland, California–Shannon Shaw, Cody Blanchard, and Nate Mahan. The band met while studying at California College of the Arts and have since released four studio albums, the first in 2009 called I Wanna Go Home.

The sound of Shannon and the Clams is super eclectic, rowdy and even a bit theatrical. Inspired by Buddy Holly and 80’s punk, the band continues to stretch the limit for their unusual, unlike-anything-you’ve-heard-before tunes, and always makes sure to deliver a top-notch live performance. You can hear it in Shannon’s voice her sense of vintage, garage-rock glam, as though sheer-pink lipstick, a bouffant and a hangover was most definitely involved in the creative process.

Each of the band’s albums is a prime showcase of their gritty, DIY style and sound–a fusion of their sassy personalities and a neon-colored energy that makes you want to shake around and dance until your eyelashes fall off. Gone by the Dawn is the name of their latest album from 2015 on Hardly Arts Records, which is their strongest, most cohesive album to date–one that’s about more serious topics than you might expect from their surface sound (like heartache and feeling lonely) which you can hear in tracks like “I Will Miss the Jasmine” and “How Long.” But even while singing about love and relationship stuff, you’ll still want to dance around to the music of Shannon and the Clams–especially when seen live.
