The beginning of 2017 has a lot of people trending towards an heir of uneasiness in light of the fragile state and unbearable amount of loss in the “industry-innovator” department (music-wise) during the not-so-long-ago 2016. But, perhaps, latest updates from the legendary guitarist and original, Black-Sabbath member Tony Iommi offers promise of a bit more stability in the upcoming months.
Iommi received, arguably, the best gift from Santa Claus on Christmas (whether one celebrates the holiday or not), when he got news that the lump removed from his throat was NOT cancerous. Iommi commented on this news via The PRP, “Well, I had the treatment when I got back from South America I went in for the throat [operation]–they found a lump at the back of my sinus in the throat and we had to have it checked in case it may have been cancerous. But it turns out it wasn’t, which I found out on Christmas Day, which is brilliant! So far [I’m all good.] I daren’t say that–I’ll probably fall down the stairs now!”
Iommi’s diagnosis of Stage 3 Lymphoma back in 2011 has been an ongoing struggle since the disease’s original prognosis. Lymphoma adds that part of Black Sabbath‘s decision to cease touring after their farewell tour in 2016 was because of the guitarist’s ongoing health problems. Last year Iommi opened up to Blabbermouth about the guitarist’s unsteady circumstances. Iommi commented, “It’s not the playing [that is taking its toll] — it’s the long flights and arriving at a hotel at 4 a.m. That’s not good for me, because it affects the blood cells. But I love playing with the band, and it’s sad to think this is the last tour.”
Iommi is currently in remission since he started treatment in 2011, and underwent further care for the disease while on a marathon tour, back in 2013, with Black Sabbath. Although news of the legend’s negative results offer relief to family and fans of Iommi, the aftermath is bittersweet given the musician’s own sadness as he reflects on his inability to tour due to his fluctuating health.
