At some point in the career of an artist they get bored and want to try something new. Their ideas become more ambitious and expensive. This is the case for Devin Townsend, known as a progressive metal icon Townsend has been around since the 90s.
He has now turned his sights on fantastic, over the top performances for his long time fans. During an interview with Noisey Townsend explained that he needs 10 million dollars to fund his next ideas.
Townsend expresses how excited and confident he is in his vision when he says, “Just you wait. I’m here at Sony tonight to pitch something I need ten million bucks for! The whole show is a metaphor for sex and power, and the idea of it all being related to some sort of God who’s ultimately futile”.
As an artist Townsend is just one of many who have a creative vision and direction that they want to pursue but the only issue holding them back is money. The most recent and obvious example of this is Kanye West and his multiple outburst at concerts and during interviews.
It can be said that the money played a small part in the motivation. In his interview with Noisey he said, ‘Yeah. It started out as just being a symphony, but then I was like, “I can’t get ten million bucks to just do a symphony.” I needed to make it like a musical, with orchestras and choirs, and if I try and be like,’
When he realized that investors would need to have a good reason to give their money, he began to expand his vision towards a much more magnificent direction.
Devin Townsend will embark on a short U.S tour along with Gojira and Opeth.
