The ’90’s folk group (or rather experimental + folk group) Cotton Mather just put out some new music, and they have the crooning, female counterpart, Nicole Atkins, to sound it all out (no pun intended).
According to Fanatic Promotions, “Cotton Mather creates 64 mini-pop masterpieces, one for each hexagram of the I Ching, an ‘extraordinary book about ordinary life,’ says mastermind, Robert Harrison. [The] latest is part of a three-song EP feat. Nicole Atkins, out Dec. 30th.“
The Cotton Mather with Nicole Atkins EP features a string of expectedly unexpected takes on traditional modes of blues and folk. On the first track from the EP “Faded”, Atkins endears listeners with her melodic, yet unrefined vocals, matched with intercepting stylings from CM frontman Harrison.
For fans of folk, rock and everything in between, the latest from Cotton Mather and Nicole Atkins epitomizes the seamless listening experience, fraught with intricate displays of instrumentation, and high production value.
While the first track off the EP may allude to the instinctual fear, and ultimate reality of “fading away”, its clear that Cotton Mather, along with Mrs. Atkins are both from it, and here for the long haul.
