Electronic music outfit, Austra, uniquely blends new wave and synthpop in a way that has been recognized and loved by fans and critics alike. Founded by Ontarian frontwoman Katie Stelmanis in 2009, Stelmanis also writes and produces Austra’s tracks using the music software Ableton Live–a popular choice among DJs and electronic musicians. Despite that, Austra’s performances are accompanied by a full band, making for a substantial live show. Austra has come a long way, and is approaching the release of their third studio album, Future Politics, which is due out on January 20th.
Stelmanis began, like many electronic musicians, making music by herself from home. During that time, she was also contributing music to the performance artist, Zeesy Powers, who encouraged her to perform her songs live. She released her debut album under her own name in 2008, entitled, Join Us. Her debut album led to tours across Europe, however, as she acquired more bandmates, the group would be given the formal name, Austra. Contrary to her current musical stylings, Stelmanis was trained in classical music from a young age, and performed in the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus. To further add to her diverse musical background, she also played in the riot grrrl punk band, Galaxy, prior to her solo endeavors.
Don’t miss an epic performance from Austra when they play at the Mohawk next month on the 4th.
