American punk/blues act Boss Hog have returned with their first full length record in 17 years, titled Brood X. The album is slated for a March 24 release via In the Red. The band had given fans a taste of new music earlier last year in June with the Brood Star EP.
Boss Hog was well known for their extended breaks and periods of radio silence, but never was there such a lack of new material. Boss Hog’s last full length was Whiteout, which was released around the turn of the century. The band got together in December 2008, and have been playing various dates across Europe and the US. And now, they’re back.
Along with the album announcement, the band released a single from the LP, called “17.” As the closer on the album, the track starts off as a slow-paced, lo-fi blues waltz with all the qualities of a Boss Hog song. Then distortion, electronic glitchiness and tape hiss start appearing on the track, for a unique new Boss Hog sound.
Boss Hog consists of American singer Jon Spencer, Spencer’s wife Christina Martinez, Jens Jurgensen, Hollis Queens and Mickey Finn. Spencer is well known from his membership in a variety of other bands that are recognized for their dirty garage rock sound, such as Pussy Galore, Heavy Trash, and the beloved Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
