The Wood Brothers @ Webster Hall 2/10

When you listen to The Wood Brothers (yes, they are real brothers, Chris and Oliver, plus third member Jano Rix) you are instantly lured into a world of true gritty soulful Americana folk. Their songs are rich and feel-good. The song “Luckiest Man” off of their first album Ways Not to Lose released in 2006 is a prime intro to the band’s sound–a slightly scratchy drawl, a steady guitar, and a catchy chorus that makes you want to sing along and laugh more with friends. Other tracks that evoke that same feeling are “Postcards From Hell” and “Pray Enough” off the album Loaded.

Having each aspired to their own musical prospects (Medeski Martin & Wood + Tinsley Ellis) the brothers later realized that the sound between them wasn’t something to be passed up. Their command of music-making is masterful. Their passion for connecting to their audience is evident (and not just through their discography but when playing live, as well).

Their latest album Paradise was recorded at Dan Auerbach’s (of the Black Keys) studio–an album that the brothers actually recorded together for once. Previously their writing style was living in separate cities, writing and recording apart, and then merging what they came up with. On this album their sound is more energetic, a bit heavier and more rock infused, but it is still classic Wood Brothers.
