When she’s not playing alongside ambient legends like Sunn O))) and Explosions in the Sky, she’s busy making music to give unto listeners. The hazy, tender voice of Grouper’s mastermind Liz Harris has graced her fans once again, with new set of singles released both digitally and on a 7″. The release, titled Paradise Valley, includes two tracks, one called “Headache,” and another by the name of “I’m Clean Now.”
“Headache” is accompanied by a sepia-toned, dreamy music video directed by artist Paul Clipson, with whom Harris collaborated with last year on his film “Hypnosis Display.” “I’m Clean Now” is also available to stream from Harris’ bandcamp.
The songs feature a departure from the stripped-down, piano-driven songs of her last LP Ruins, and instead features a steady, clean finger-picked guitar with the usual ambience and atmosphere that fans have come to know and love Grouper for over the years.
The release’s cover, a picture of a gorgeous, sun-kissed landscape tinged by pink and light blue hues, contrasts with her previous black-and-white images. The music is similarly much brighter and prettier, but not in any such way that compromises Grouper’s comfortable sonic aura, which is rather magnified through Harris’ liberal usage of reverb and echo.
