From Dev Hynes, Lightspeed Champion to Blood Orange this one man circus has accumulated a busy yet successful career. Blood Orange is a British singer, songwriter, composer, producer and author. Beginning his music career in 2004 as Dev Hynes, he became a member of the band Test Icicles. The band released one full-length album in 2005. In 2006, Hynes decided to part his own ways and go by the name of “Lightspeed Champion” then eventually, “Blood Orange.” From the years 2008-2016 he released 2 albums under the name of “Lightspeed Champion” and 3 under the name “Blood Orange.”
Most recently, he has dropped a music video for his song “Better Than Me” from his latest album Freetown Sound. The video starts off with a set of men and women performing a choreographed dance in what looks like a loft of some sort. During this introduction, there is small commentary and then the song breaks out. In the song, Carly Rae Jepsen is featured in this song and is shown singing along in the music video as well.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly he explained the deeper context of the single “Better Than Me.” He Explains, “That song is about a weird jealously with being—kind of what I said (about feeling) not black enough or not queer enough. That song is about that dark moment when you look around. You can visualize the person. It’s the moment when you slip into that doubt and that weird jealousy.” He further explains in the interview that he is not quite sure if Carly Rae Jepsen even knows what she is singing about! Carly sings, “Ninety-nine percent, I know you’re not find. Now everyone could be mistakenly kind.” Seemingly listening to the song, he explains that he (and everyone) is showing his insecurities by projecting a hatred type of jealousy toward others.
