The roots of American Wrestlers– contrary to the band’s name –stem from Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow. Gary McClure is the founder of American Wrestlers. Raised in Scotland, McClure would later settle in Manchester due to his father’s work. He would go on to collaborate with producer Phil Kay, to work in the alternative rock band, Working in a Nuclear Free City. Due to musical differences, McClure started to work on his own solo recordings, which met mild success.
American Wrestlers was finally formed in St. Luis, where McClure moved to follow his love interest Brigette Imperial. The two eventually got married in St. Luis, and McClure began recording music again under the moniker American Wrestlers. An eight-song album released on Bandcamp in 2014, which resonated with critics and fans alike. The album led to a signing with Fat Possum Records, who physically released his album in 2015.
American Wrestlers is on to support the newly released album, Goodbye Terrible Youth. You can see McClure and his band perform at the Sidewinder next month on the 14th.
