The 2017 Grammy nominations were announced earlier today, and Beyoncé leads all nominees with nine nominations. Rihanna, Drake and Kanye West all followed close behind with eight nominations respectively.
Beyoncé’s battle against fellow female pop vocalist Adele will be the Grammy’s most intriguing story. Adele landed five total nominations, including nominations for Album of the Year (25), and Song and Record of the Year (“Hello”). Beyoncé was also nominated for Album of the Year (Lemonade), and Song and Record of the Year (“Formation”). Beyoncé and Adele are considered the presumptive frontrunners in these categories.
Drake (Views), Justin Bieber (Purpose), and Sturgill Simpson (A Sailor’s Guide to Earth) also received nominations for Album of the Year. While Drake and Bieber’s nominations are relatively unsurprisingly, Simpson’s nomination comes at the expense of expected nominee David Bowie (Backstar).
Among other notable nominations, critically maligned groups Twenty One Pilots and The Chainsmokers received four and three nominations respectively. The Chainsmokers are up for Best New Artist along with Kelsea Ballerina, Chance the Rapper, Maren Morris, Anderson .Paak.
Further, the anemic Best Rock Performance category demonstrates the dearth of true modern rock stars. Aside from Alabama Shakes, a bona fide southern rock group, non-rock singer Beyoncé (albeit with a Jack White feature), the great, yet deceased David Bowie, heavy metal group Disturbed, and the previously discussed Twenty One Pilots make up the category’s nominations. Also notable, Metallica failed to receive a nomination for Best Metal Performance, potentially signally a shifting of the guard in the category.
On the flip-side, critical darlings Bon Iver (22, A Million), David Bowie (Blackstar), PJ Harvey (The Hope Six Demolition Project), Iggy Pop (Post Pop Depression), and Radiohead (A Moon Shaped Pool) each received nominations for Best Alternative Music Album. Kanye West also managed to earn two nominations for Best Rap Song, for “Famous” and Ultralight Beam” respectively.
