LISTEN: Junkie XL Releases New Song “The Workx”

Dutch trance artist Junkie XL, a.k.a Tom Holkenborg adds another notch to his bed post with more of a masterful score for film. The upcoming surf movie Distance Between The Dreams boasts gorgeous scenes with surfer Ian Walsh and, now, the new song by Holkenborg, “The Workx”.

According to Under The Radar Mag,

“Holkenborg is more famously known as Junkie XL, and his recent work includes many Hollywood blockbusters, from Deadpool to Batman v Superman and UTR-favorite Mad Max: Fury Road. Like many of his scores, Distance Between Dreams was recorded using analog equipment, which he utilized recreate the feeling of the oceanic waves that surfers like Walsh love to ride.

As Holkenborg said of composing the film’s soundtrack: “Trying to tell Ian’s story was a tremendous learning experience for me. Surfing is a dangerous, solitary, and very noble pursuit, and I think the majority of people are unaware of just how athletic guys like Ian are. The work he has to put in and out of the water is tremendous. The ocean is a magical place, but it’s also dangerous. Capturing Ian’s spirit and the dichotomy of his environment is what is at the heart of this score.”

The Workx single, out on Lakeshore Records, is an aqua-centric meandering through whimsical inquiries of the surfing aesthetic. Holkenborg manages to indulge listeners, of whom may not be so familiar with the physical act of surfing, in a music equivalent to. The song acts as a sort of simulator for the ears, while complimenting the fierce swells overlapping in the cinematography. Bravo, bravado.
