While the Dropkick Murphys may have a stronghold on the city of Boston, their fans all over can feast on the group’s new single “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, now available to those who pre-order the January 6 release of 11 Short Stories of Pain and Glory via the band’s label Born and Bred Records.

The new song for the Dropkick Murphys actually finds itself “repurposed” for the group’s own message of hope. But, musicologists out their might know the tune as an old hit; for, it’s original renderings goes all the way back to Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel, and then rears it’s head in the form of a soccer anthem sung by Liverpool F.C. fans, but, also as an early chart-topper for Gerry and The Pacemakers.

As mentioned, The Dropkick Murphys’ version of You’ll Never Walk Alone opens up a new dialogue, as a sweeping epidemic of heroin overdoses overshadows the US currently. “Between Al’s loss and all the friends and people that I know, I’d say I’ve been to 50 wakes in the last three years,” says singer/bassist Ken Casey. “I was leaving another overdose wake and the song came on in the car,” he adds. “My music was on shuffle, and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ randomly played. As I heard the chorus, ‘Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone,’ it struck me how powerfully the song related to the struggle and how you don’t have to do it alone.”

Thus, the single, an irish folk/punk homage, at hand acts as a kind of beacon of light in the dark, stormy waters out in the depths of drug addiction. Subsequently, You’ll Never Walk Alone is doted as the first song recorded on the group’s ninth studio album, but additionally boasts the overall theme presented in the record’s content.

Lovers of the Boston, Irish-Punk band can catch the group and hear the new single live (post-album release), when the Dropkick Murphys kick-off their “11 Short Stories of Pain and Glory” tour February 21st, 2017 in Bethlehem, Pennyslvania.
