The quivering, Americana infused vocal styling of Samantha Crain– along with backing, indie folk instrumentation –has proven to be quite a successful combination for the talented, 30-year old Oklahoman musician. On much closer inspection, her nasally vocal style seems to closely resemble a feminine Jeff Buckley, especially on the track “Outside the Pale,” from her latest 2015 LP Under Branch & Thorn & Tree. With her unique sound, Crain has recognizably set herself apart from her contemporary’s, and fans will surely appreciate her ability to do so.
Crain’s musical career began when she was still in high school, where she taught herself the guitar just before entering senior year. During her time at Oklahoma Baptist University, the then 19-year-old Crain found a way to earn college credit by writing and performing songs. After some time of touring, she would later sign on to Ramseur Records. The label would go on to release her debut EP, The Confiscation: A Musical Novella. Since then, Crain has seen several successful releases, and has worked with the likes of Murder by Death, Ali Harter, Matt Hopper, and Penny Hill among others.
Crain will be performing alongside Will Johnson next month on the 26th at the Mohawk.
