Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and producer Ferrari Shephard have revealed they will release a collaborative album under the name Dec. 99th. The album, entitled December 99th, is out December 9 exclusively via Tidal.
According to a press release, Bey and Shephard “spent the last year recording in South Africa” while Yasiin Bey “awaited his departure from the country.” Shephard produced the entire album, which will include previously released tracks “Local Time,” “N.A.W.,” and “Seaside Panic Room.” Check out the album’s tracklist and artwork below.
Earlier this month, Bey announced his final United States performances. He was only recently allowed to leave South Africa following his nearly yearlong detention for use of an illegal passport. Bey previously said he would retire from both the music and film industries following the release of his upcoming album.
Bey has yet to release a full-length LP under his current name. His most recent release as Mos Def, The Ecstatic (his fourth release), received universal acclaim.
December 99th marks activist/producer Shephard’s first full-length release. He and Bey first linked up in Ethiopia in 2013 for a series of visual art and web projects. Bey’s influence led Shephard into music production.
