For a long time now Ticketmaster has reigned uncontested as the top concert ticket retailer in the US. Whether you live down the road from the venue or are traveling a long distance for the chance to hear your favorite band in person chances are you will be logging into the Ticketmaster site and frantically typing in your payment info before the allotted time runs out and those front row seats are turned over to someone else. This has been the way of things for many years now and in spite of controversies over service fees and scalpers, it is hard to imagine getting tickets any other way. Until now that is, as everyone’s favorite one-stop shop for phone cases and everything else that’s just kind of cool; Amazon is planting their flag in the ticketing service market.
Following a soft launch in the UK last year, but the company is now actively building up Amazon Tickets with plans of expansion into the US, Europe, and Asia. Not satisfied playing second fiddle to their competitors Amazon’s goal for this expansion is to become the world’s premier destination for purchasing tickets.
The head of Amazon tickets Ian Freed threw down the gauntlet stating “Our vision goes beyond just selling tickets as we aim to disrupt the entire live entertainment experience, including what happens before, during and after the show. The ticketing business is ripe for innovation and improvement, as much of the industry has not fundamentally changed since the 1970s.”
