Sad13 is the relatively new pop project from Speedy Ortiz’s self-proclaimed “frontdemon,” – see her recent Reddit AMA – Sadie Dupuis.
During the recording of Speedy Ortiz’s 2015 album Foil Deer, Sadie had just gone through a horribly abusive relationship. Thus, she chose to deviate from thinking about the past, and instead decided to focus more on her craft, song writing. The negative experiences she had gone through, inspired her to grow stronger as a musician. Sadie’s liberating and positive attitude resulted in a collection of songs – released and produced herself – under the moniker Sad13. Slugger, Sad13’s debut record, shy’s away from the noisy, grunge infused indie rock of Speedy Ortiz’s work, in favor of synthesized, fuzzy, pop tracks. Her new project also seems to take aim at societal norms involving love and relationships. On her video for the single <2, Sadie also pokes fun at pop culture, where she imitates popular YouTube beauty gurus and popular cosmetic trends.
Sadie will be playing her first Austin show as Sad13 next month at The Mohawk on the 7th.
