While attending The University of California Berkeley, Charlie Yin began producing music under the moniker Giraffage, and while his music technically falls under the category of EDM, he along with many others, are shifting away from the popular conventions that plague the genre. Like most producers, Yin’s love for music is incredibly diverse, and includes an early passion for hardcore and post-rock music, although he cites the highly acclaimed electronic outfit Boards of Canada as an influence.
Yin also has a fondness for R&B, which is plain to see as he has remixed The Dream’s album Love/Hate in its entirety. His debut 4-track EP, Pretty Things released in 2011, and displayed his ability to craft calming, stripped back electronic tracks. Later that year, he released his first full-length album Comfort, that combined a multitude of hip hop infused beats and instrumentals to construct an ambiance that more than lived up to the album’s name. Giraffage has toured and worked with numerous artists, some of which include XXYYXX, and Phantogram. 2014 saw the release of Giraffage’s latest EP No Reason, which released through the popular independent hip hop/electronic label Fools Gold Records, and stylistically displayed sounds reminiscent of breakbeat and jersey club music.
