Since 2001, Greg “Oblivion” Cartwright has been at the helm of the rock & roll band Reigning Sound, despite several variations in line up. Influenced by his father’s love of British invasion and American rock, Cartwright began forming bands as early as middle school. That trend continued into adulthood. After several projects, notably The Oblivions and The Compulsive Gamblers, Cartwright began working on songs that didn’t quite fit the musical formula of those groups. Those songs eventually made it onto Reigning Sound’s first single Two Sides to Every Man. The soul and blues elements of Reigning Sound required a new dynamic, and a fresh line up of members.
Following the release of Two Sides to Every Man, was the 2001 debut album Break up Break Down, which released on the label Sympathy for the Record Industry. The Americana, garage rock style of their debut became a foundation for Reigning Sounds musical progression. Throughout the 00s, Reigning Sound released a handful of records, EPs, singles, compilations, and live albums, giving new fans a hefty catalog to work through. During that time, they headlined tours, opened for bands like The Hives, and recorded with the likes of prominent Memphis musicians Alicja Trout and the late Jay Reatard.
With the onset of the new decade came the release of 2009’s full-length album Love and Curses. Cartwright recorded with numerous bands during their slight hiatus after 2005’s Home for Orphans. This made Love and Curses a hotly anticipated record among fans, and somewhat marked the return for the idle group. Although, fans would have to tolerate another long five year wait for the groups follow up. In 2014, Reigning Sound continued their soulful rock & roll ways with their latest full-length Shattered. The recording of the album took place at the legendary Daptone Studios; A perfect fit for the bands soulful nature. This release also marked another pivotal point in the bands long history, as Shattered was first album to release on the popular label Merge Records.
Reigning Sound is a headliner for the Good Vibrations III fest, which kicks off on December 1st. Weekend and single day passes are both available.
