As one of the headliners for the upcoming Good Vibrations festival, you can count on an over the top, outlandish, and possibly exposed rock & roll performance from Justin Champlin, better known by his moniker NOBUNNY. What started as a unique take on Elvis impersonation, eventually gave way to the maniacal entity NOBUNNY. Champlin is infamously known for performing in a mask, a trend that most people now associate with the EDM scene. Of course, NOBUNNY’s aesthetic might be as far from EDM as one can get. The dawning of the bunny mask, and the likely consumption of alcohol, give way to a bizarre stage persona.
In 2008, NOBUNNY released his debut LP Love Visions on 1-2-3-4 Go! Records, which paired his crazy style with distorted, but addictive bubblegum pop infused garage punk tracks. The album not only widened the reach of his goofy shock rocker antics, but also distinguished NOBUNNY as an admittedly serious musician. His second full-length record First Blood, this time released on Goner Records, came out in 2010. In typical NOBUNNY fashion, the disorienting hooks and 60s inspired pop garage rock is ever-present, and as we’ve come to expect, executed in the way NOBUNNY is known for.
It seems that the bunny mask sporting madman, otherwise known as NOBUNNY, has no plans of bringing his absurd take on punk rock to a halt. Whirling, grimy pop tunes, overlaid with an on-stage presence that’s doubtlessly inspired by the likes of GG Allin and Lux Interior; That sentence more or less (probably less) describes the type of show you’re in for. Witness the majesty that is NOBUNNY at Barracuda on December 2nd as part of the Good Vibrations III fest, which includes over 40 bands, spanning multiple venues.
