Saturday Night Live momentarily set the jokes aside for an emotional performance by Kate McKinnon, who performed cover of “Hallelujah” by the late Leonard Cohen after the world learned of his unfortunate passing on Nov. 7. The Saturday Night Live member opened the show dressed as Hillary Clinton, while she played a large black piano and sang along to the popular ballad to commemorate the beloved singer.
Hillary Clinton has been McKinnon’s most popular character on the show these past few weeks leading up to election night last Tuesday. Her and Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump have been putting on a series of hilarious comedy sketches that poked fun at the presidential candidates, but this one took on a more serious note. Following the performance, McKinnon voiced encouraging words saying “I’m not giving up and neither should you,” before their signiture tagline “And live from New York, it’s Saturday night.” Check below to watch the video.
The Cadanaian singer/songwriter passed away at the age of 82 after a meaningful career in the music industry. The music legend touched on serious topics ranging from politics to sexuality. His most notable work has been the song “hallelujah” released in 1984, and gained popularity after being on the Shrek soundtrack in 2001. Since then the song has been covered by various artists and featured in countless more movie and television soudtracks.
