This weeks episode of Saturday Night Live was dedicated to the legends and nostalgia. As reported by ROLLINGSTONE, last nights episode of Saturday Night Live featured the legendary and reclusive comedian Dave Chappelle and a performance by the hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest.
The appearance of A Tribe Called Quest is not unexpected. Over Dave Chappelle’s career he has never been mute about his love for hip hop. Dave Chappelle had been around for years performing standup and appearing in different films. But it was in the early 2000’s where Dave skyrocketed to fame through his sketch comedy show Chappelle Show. Often times the show would feature performances by hip hop artists who did not have many places to perform on television. An early Kanye West can be seen performing along with many others.
A Tribe Called Quest returning to the limelight could have been enough to satisfy fans of the group. But they did not show up empty handed. Friday, they released their new and final album “We Got It From Here, Thank You For Your Service” and performed two tracks off of the new album effort with the help off Busta Rhymes and Consequesnce.
The first song “We The People” a hard hitting beat mixed with meaningful words, gave A Tribe Called Quest fans what they have been missing. They paid tribute to deceased group member Phife Dawg, who recently had street dedicated to him, by letting his verse play while a painting with Phife’s head on it fell down from the top of the screen. A wonderful nod to someone who was more than a group member, but a brother to Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
The next song, “The Space Program” starts off with both remaining group members pointing towards the painting of Phife Dawg while rapping along to the song. At one point during the performance, Q-Tip begins to talk to the crowd and viewers and the camera cuts to surprise guests Busta Rhymes and Consequence.
