System of a Down Singer and Drummer Provide Differing Updates on New Album

Legendary metal rock band System Of A Down, who recently announced their 2017 European Summer tour, has been playing cat and mouse with their fan base as of late, singer Serj Tankian making claims he is open to working on new album, and photos of the band in the studio being shared, there seems to now be two differing opinions on whether or not the band will be releasing a new album. The group has not released a new LP since Mezmerize and Hypnotize in 2005, and fans have been waiting a long eleven years for something to come out of their laboratory.

According to Blabbermouth, in recent interview, drummer John Dolmayan revealed that SOAD has written over a dozen songs for the possible follow-up LP “We’ve been working on a new album for the last six months and there’s about 15 songs that I think are album-worthy,” he told Kerrang! magazine “We don’t know what’s happening in terms of release, it’s still not 100% as far as plans go. I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now. There’s a tremendous amount of pressure on us, though, because it’s been 11 years – at least 12 by the time it comes out.” He also added regarding the new musical direction the band is going in, saying “Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things. We’re not trying to make Toxicity Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of System Of A Down fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels.”

Tankian, however, has been downplaying the process going along, spending more of his focus on his other facets, like scoring films (“1915“‘), sci-fi games (“Midnight Star”, “Renegade”, “Prometheus Bound”), musicals, as well as his own content. In recent LA Weekly article, he stated “We’re going to get together and see if that’s going to be System music or not. And who the fuck knows? If it is, great, and if it’s not, then great” he continued “Some people are like, ‘Stop it, fuckhead, go make another record with System and stop talking politics and stop doing your art,'” he said. “There are always those boneheads — and obviously they deserve oxygen as well,” concluding, “If you enjoy making the same rock record for the rest of your life, keep making the same rock record for the rest of your life,” he said. “But I don’t.”

So whilst getting these mixed signals and hints from the members, it does seem to be that there will be a new album coming out soon, baring any setbacks.
