Indie Folk musician Mark Kozelek, also known as Sun Kil Moon, is hitting the road again with Jesu to promote their collaborative LP that came out in January of this year. Throughout his extensive musical career, Kozelek has been involved in a bevy of projects. Early on, Kozelek fronted the 90’s folk-rock band Red House Painters. After the dissolution of Red House Painters, Kozelek released a handful of solo work, and eventually went on to produce his own music under the moniker Sun Kil Moon. In 2003, the debut Sun Kil Moon LP Ghost of the Great Highway was commercially released. With eight albums as Sun Kil Moon, six albums with Red House Painters, and a slew of solo releases, Kozelek has proven to be one of the more prolific musicians in the industry. Despite his copious discography, Kozelek has continued to release incredibly emotional, and satisfying albums, finding a distinct balance between quality and quantity.
2013 was a particularly impressive year for Kozelek, as he had just released the sixth Sun Kil Moon album Benji, which accumulated generous amounts of acclaim from numerous media publications. Benji was a profoundly personal album that dealt primarily with themes of death, and loss. Known for his deeply personal and confessional lyrics, Kozelek’s music has resonated with people of all ages and musical tastes. His consistency as a musician has made him a favorite of mine, as well as countless indie folk fans all over the world.
Earlier this year, Kozelek and British experimental post-rock outfit Jesu, released their first collaborative LP entitled Jesu/Sun Kil Moon. They are currently working on a follow up album, 30 Seconds to the Decline of Planet Earth, which is slated to be released on June 1st, 2017. You can catch Sun Kil Moon, preforming together with Jesu, on the 15th of November. They sold out half of the shows on their brief tour early this year, so be sure to get your tickets in advance.
