According to the ROLLING STONE, MUSE has returned with an unexpected Halloween gift for their faithful fans. The song is a cover of a previously released song off the album titled “Bad Music for Bad People”. Muse making the choice to cover a previously released song is not a new creative choice. Some of the biggest and most beloved songs in history are covers. From Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman” or “If I were a Boy” by Beyonce and “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. Many other artists have taken creative liberties with music from the past and Muse has done the same thing with their song “New Kind of Kick”.
The cover photo of the video does a good job at providing a hint to the viewer of what they are in for.
Each member is wearing a black leather jacket with one of them, Matt Bellamy, singing and moving in a way that is very reminiscent of an era of music that we are so far away from. There is also creative animated drawing “Some” and “New Kind of”. With an all black background, the band member somewhat disappears into the background and allow the music to take over.
The video starts off with a shot of a woman laying down on the ground while staring into the camera. She has a hairstyle that could be from decades ago during an era of horror films. Next to her the words begin to appear in a style that many can recall seeing in the long-running Simpsons Halloween special that comes out each year. Coincidentally the words “Halloween special” do appear as the songs begins to play.
The video appears to have been shot in one room while using a projector to project images of a classic era onto the body Muse members. Don’t fall for the same trick that I fell for when I continued to see the lyrics appear on screen as the band member sung and played instruments. That does not happen in the entire video but it makes an appearance throughout the video. Through the gyrating movements of lead singer Matt Belamy as well as constant flashes of classic rock style makeup that may have been inspired by a Halloween theme. The entire video is somewhat of a tribute to an unforgettable time in music and an introduction into on the most anticipated times of the year.
