Baton Rouge rapper Kevin Gates just went from two phones to one call from a pay phone when he was sentenced to a 180 day prison sentence after being convicted of a misdemeanor battery charge this past Wednesday, October 26th. The charge was the result of an incident with a female fan at a show at Rumors Nightclub in Lakeland, Florida back in August of 2015. Gates was caught on video forcefully kicking 19-year-old Miranda Dixon after she reached out from the front row and grabbed his shorts. During trial she claimed that she was “trying to get his attention for her friend”, but the attempt resulted in a kick so powerful that it reportedly sent Dixon flying backward and left her temporily unconscious.
Gates was taken into custody directly following the trial. He will be serving his time in Polk County Jail in Frostproof, Florida.
TMZ posted video footage of the incident, in which he seems to seriously overact to the fan. In court he simply said, “I kicked them…I wanted them off me.” Despite his claims of self-defense the judge and jury agreed that Gates’ reaction was too severe given the circumstances. Simultaneously, Gates’ attorney Jose Baez argued in trial that Miranda Dixon may be “embellishing” her side of the story, and that the injuries she claims as a result of the chest blow may be fabricated.
Fox 13 News of Tampa Bay claims that the the judge also sentenced Gates to one year probation after completing his jail time, and that the sentence was supposedly “three times what prosecutors requested.”
