Russian punk outfit Pussy Riot have released new song, “Straight Outta Vagina”, and its accompanying video.
TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek produced “Straight Outta Vagina”, and the track features Desi Mo and Leikeli47. The track’s lyrics celebrate the vagina, continuing Pussy Riot’s string of unabashedly feminist anthems.
Notable lyrics include: “If your vagina lands in prison, then the whole world’s going to listen.” And: “Don’t play stupid, don’t play dumb, vagina’s where you’re really from.”
“Straight Outta Vagina’s” incendiary lyrics are clearly relevant in today’s often hyper-masculine political climate. However, the song’s production lacks any truly notable elements.
Dave Sitek’s production forces the Russian riot grrrl’s into unfamiliar, and frankly, uncomfortable territory. He trades TV on the Radio’s grimy exuberance for Jurassic 5-like drums and horns combinations, forcibly overshadowing the vocals.
Desi Mo and Leikeli47 drop ugly, uncreative verses alongside Pussy Riot’s sing-rapped choruses, straying far too often toward flamboyancy without purpose. The feminist sentiment will make media outlets swoon, but the track fails in nearly every other manner.
“Straight Outta Vagina’s” video features Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova wearing white clerical robes and her trademark balaclava, plus a line of men and women sitting in toilet cubicles and standing at urinals. The video’s slight surrealism fares markedly better than the track itself, creatively conveying Pussy Riot’s intended message.
Tolokonnikova and Sitek recorded the track back in February. They purposely recorded the “Straight Outta Vagina” in response to Donald Trump’s continuous public misogyny. Watch the track’s video below.
